College Guidance

Charting a Path to College in Grades 9 through 12

Beth Tfiloh’s renowned College Guidance program begins in the ninth grade. Grade advisers get to know our freshmen and encourage them to enroll in the most challenging classes available to them. Continuing through High School, academic advisers ensure that each student is placed in classes appropriate for their skill level. In the 11th grade, students begin the more formal college guidance process. They meet with the college guidance counselors to map out strategies for preparing for the college admission process.

Standardized Testing

Standardized testing for college begins with the first PSAT exam in the 10th grade and again in the 11th grade. This is the exam which qualifies a student for the National Merit Scholarship competition. After January of the junior year, students work with their college counselors to plan a test taking schedule including SAT Reasoning, SAT Subject Test, and ACTs. Beth Tfiloh administers the SAT and the ACT on a number of Sundays throughout the year. We also administer the School Day SAT once during the year.

Advanced Placement

We urge students who are eligible to enroll in Advanced Placement Courses in the various content areas. We administer the AP tests each spring as scheduled by The College Board.
Student Advocacy

We believe that each student deserves a personal advocate as he or she applies to post-secondary programs and we have made this advocacy a priority. Our college guidance counselors contact admissions representatives on behalf of each senior, helping to ensure our seniors’ acceptances into the college or university program that is the right fit for each student.
College Fairs and Visits

Beth Tfiloh students and parents participate in the Association of Independent Maryland Schools’ (AIMS) College Fair in the spring of their junior year. Juniors and seniors are given days off from their classes to tour college campuses. Additionally, each fall representatives from various colleges meet with our juniors and seniors on our school campus. Our college guidance counselors facilitate programs that focus specifically on the college admission process, where they also address the financial aid application process.
Jewish Life on Campus & Israel Programs

We encourage our students and parents to consider the quality of Jewish life on campus when choosing colleges and universities. High School faculty members present post-High school Israel program options and help students and parents make informed choices with regard to Jewish life on campus and Israel programs.
